Earlier Marco Hanna reported about Facebook acquiring Instagram for a pretty hefty 1 billion. That’s a lot of money any way you slice it. While Facebook has gone on record as saying that Instagram would go on to run as a separate company, something more under the radar might be occurring. If you weren’t already aware, Microsoft owns a 1.6% share of Facebook, not to mention other collaborations that Microsoft and Facebook have undertaken. Facebook is built directly into Windows Phone, You can make Skype calls between Facebook accounts and Bing search powers Facebook’s. Their alliance is a pretty strong one.
Instagram is used by over 27 million people, that number being solely by iOS users and with Instagram’s extension to Android will make that number skyrocket. With Windows Phone users clamoring for a Instagram app, could this be the move that finally makes one happen? Seeing as Windows Phones entire approach has been around integration, I would be surprised if it got integrated into the core of the OS, if not in time for Windows Phone 8, then sometime after that. In the mean time an app would be just the thing to make Windows Phone owners happy. I look forward to seeing if the Instagram team takes advantage of the Metro design language.
