We just wrapped things up at the press conference Google held to debut some neat features for the next generation of Google Mapping applications and one of the most interesting ones is 3D modeling. Google has had a history with working on 3D and now it’s going to a whole new level. Google Planes with Google-designed camera systems fly over locations in a controlled pattern and take 45-degree angle shots from several directions and directly down. After this, they collect the data from the images and run their own special software to make a 3D-mesh of the buildings, trees, basically anything, even landscapes.
Then they go back to the images and extract the best looking colors and make the 3D model which looks like a birds-eye view. This actually looks very stunning when it was demoed live. They also have another feature added on to this one called Tour Guide which will find you landmarks and historical buildings and gives you a tour filled with information and stunning images, they demoed the AT&T Park in San Francisco, pretty neat I must admit. We will be able to see this new Google Earth in the coming weeks on both Android and iOS.
