Looks like Tim Cook may of scared AT&T into unlocking their iPhones. With many requests from AT&T and Apple customers, AT&T will now start unlocking iPhones for free starting April 8th. This is for any iPhone that is not under a contract with them currently can be unlocked if you walk into an AT&T retail store. Thanks Tim!
Once you unlock the phone you can use it on any GSM network in the US, which a popular choice is T-Mobile. Also a plus is that if you do a lot of international travel, you will be able to just purchase a pre-paid sim from what ever country you are in and pop it in the your phone and kabam! The joys of unlocking things!
Here’s AT&T’s official statement:
Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.
