A Challenger Appears!
Man, could things get any worse for Netflix? After all the botched stuff this summer, the price jack and the failed spin off, things were starting to look up for the company again. Stocks were up, and slowly people seemed to be forgetting the past.
In fact just yesterday Netflix announced a deal with The Weinstein Co for rights to stream their films weeks before any other media. Yay! More looking up.
And then, hours later, another problem bubbled up. Comcast, one of the largest content providers in the world and owner of NBC, announced a new streaming service called Xfinity Streampix. This will push to phones, iPads, PC’s, and anything else that can support streaming media. The big stinger? It is only going to cost $5 a month, and will be free for people with bundled services from Comcast.
Que Netflix losing almost 4% stock share. Ouch.
There are lots of streaming media services out there, from Walmart to Amazon, but Netflix has always remained at the top. Hulu offered some stiff competion, but never really got the traction it needed to be a game changer. However, we now have a content producer that is involved in digital distribution, and that may change the whole game. I guess only time, and earning, will really tell.
