OK guys, we are still continuing our coverage of the Motorola Droid X, and this time we are doing a Software Review of this Droid X!

Android

This is running Android 2.1, so Multi-Touch works, but you will have a over the air update for the X for Android 2.2 code named Froyo (Frozen Yogurt) in the latter part of this summer. On top of Android 2.1 is a new version of MottoBlur…. Don’t scream just yet. This is an all new version, a non cartoony, non up in your face version that I actually like. So for you who don’t know what MotoBlur is… Well MotoBlur is a skin that lays on top of the stock Android 2.1, so if you seen the HTC Incredible with it’s funky, awesome widgets, that’s not Android, that is HTC Sense.

Text Messaging and Email

Texting and Emailing on a smart phone should be second nature by now. And Motorola does not disappoint. The keyboard (Virtual, not physical) is very nice, with Haptic feedback which means it vibrates every time you press a letter/number/symbol/etc. Also has this new software called Swype which lets you draw lines from every letter, so say that I want to type Hi, I start from H, and then draw a line to I, and I spell HI

I am not that good at Swype, but they broke the record of the fastest text message, so I guess it works!

Other from that the Droid X functions as any other Android device but wayyyyyyyyy FASTER!

Israel did a video showing off the great hardware of the Motorola Droid X, which releases July, 15th.

The Droid X has a massive 4.3″ screen, LCD TFT display, also has the Texas Instruments 3650 Processor which clocks in at 1GHZ! You guys have heard of the Snap Dragon’s on the Incredible, and other Android smart phones, and the A-4 chip on iPhone 4, and iPad! But this is a powerful processor, which makes this phone a total screamer when it comes down to browsing the web, and opening, and using applications and widgets on your device. It also has 512MB of RAM!

Storage is also pretty good on this phone, it comes with a 16GB MicroSD card, and it can support up to 32GB.

The Droid X has physical buttons on the bottom instead of touch buttons, I like that a bit more, I think the use of hardware buttons are becoming more and more rare, and it’s nice to see Motorola using that.

Overall the phone is nice, slim, and very pocketable, unless you are wearing skin tight jeans, it will bulge a little bit out of the pocket, but it’s very comfortable.

So everyone knows what a iPhone is right? If not, here’s a brief overview, it’s slab, that has a screen, and you touch the screen instead of buttons. The first phone to do that. Now over at Verizon they have a phone named the HTC Droid Incredible, and trust me, IT’S INCREDIBLE. If I wasn’t super glued to AT&T and my iPhone, I would be owning one today. It’s a bit bigger than the iPhone by .2 inches, not too big, not too small. The iPhone is not small, but I can live with a 3.7 inch screen than a 3.5 inch screen. The Incredible runs Android 2.1 which supports Multi Touch, the fabulous thing that lets you use 2 fingers or more , and also has a custom skin called HTC Sense which you see is on the EVO, Aria, and other HTC Android devices. HTC Sense is very beautiful, Sense UI, and Android is pretty much based on widgets, and great third party applications, unlike the iPhone which is all applications.

Why the iPhone is faster:

Now the Incredible has a 1GHZ processor in the phone, not to long ago, that was in computers! I am an iPhone user, but I am a Android fan as well. If the iPhone didn’t exist I would be using Android A LOT! But the reason why the iPhone is so successful in the mobile industry because IT’S CLEAN! What Android tries to do is jam a lot of things on home screens that uses RAM, ROM, and clogs up your processor. The iPhone is an application based UI. You get the basic stock apps like weather, YouTube, Mail, etc. But you download apps from the App Store. Nothing gets changed on the UI, all it does is add an icon to your home screen so you can launch it.

On Android you have widgets that run constantly. I love the widgets on Android, I wish Apple would have some, but also knowing what widgets do to your phone which is SLOW IT DOWN, which is why Apple went with Applications instead. Now Android has the Market Place, which is growing daily, and believe me it’s a great experience! Just like the App Store.

iPhone and Android are two wonderful platforms, but me being an Apple fan, as well as a Google fan, it’s clearly a draw for me, and it’s more of a personal choice.

If you have AT&T and you want a phone, but don’t feel like switching carriers, you can get an iPhone, or an HTC Aria if you want Android, but you will get a much smaller screen.

If you are on Verizon and don’t want to switch carriers, you can get the HTC Incredible, or you can wait until we review the Motorola Droid X which is a 4.3 inch Android device that sure looks like a great phone!

Whatever your choice is, you will not be let down on both platforms.

So if you have been living under a rock for the past month or so, iOS4 has been out for a few days, and let me tell you, it’s an amazing firmware upgrade! Multi-tasking is done just right, I mean Apple really nailed this one! It just works so well, and it made my 3GS a lot quicker! Overall the new features are quite good, and the performance of my 3GS is improved by a mile if you ask me. And earlier today I was playing around with a iPhone 4 with iOS4 and it works ten times better! Check out the video below! Comment you’re thoughts on iOS4! We would love to hear from you!
